UNICORN

The unicorn is the symbol of purity and grace. It is considered magical and a sign of power and prestige.

This legendary animal is always depicted with a single spiral horn extending from the center of its forehead. It is often portrayed in modern times with the body of a horse. It was portrayed in medieval European heraldry with the body of a white horse, the goat’s cloven hooves and beard, the lion’s tail, and the spiral horn. There are other variations, usually involving the goat’s hooves, the horse’s body, and the spiral horn. It was depicted in the Bible in various passages of the Old Testament. It appeared in Mesopotamian artwork and the ancient legends of China and Japan. It appeared in the histories of ancient Greek historians, including Pliny the Elder and Ctesias, as real rather than mythical. It was frequently used in the great tapestries of Europe during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It was used as the symbol of the incarnation of Christ in an elaborate allegory in which the unicorn lays its head of the lap of a maiden representing the Virgin Mary and falls asleep. In Western literature, it was depicted as a creature of purity and grace that could be captured only by a virgin.  It was considered an emblem of chaste love and faithful marriage.
