Spider is a symbol of patience, receptivity, creativity, feminine energy, creator, shadow self, and communication.

Spider is an Arachnid of the order Aranea which has eight legs, venomous fangs, and spinnerets that can exude a silken material. It is known for the beautifully intricate webs it weaves and uses to capture prey. It is found on every continent except Antarctica. Spider and the Spider web have had a great impact on religion, culture, myth, and art throughout history in cultures all over the world. In ancient Sumeria, Spider was a goddess of weaving. In Greek myth, the goddess Athena competed in a weaving contest with Arachna. In African myth, Spider is a trickster. In Native American myth, Spider is sometimes a trickster and sometimes the creator. The Hopi and Navajo see Spider as a creator. Spider is recognized by some Native American tribes as the creator of the alphabet. In Norse legend, the trickster god Loki was associated with Spider. In Indian Vedic traditions, the Spider weaves the veil of Maya that plunges us into illusion. In Japanese myth, Spider is a monster. Spider appears as a symbol for some European kings including King Robert of Scotland and France’s Louis XI who was known as the “universal spider.” Spider appears in Ovid’s Metamorphosis” and in literature throughout history. Walter Scott’s most famous line was: “Oh what a tangled web we weave …” Spider appears in children’s rhymes and stories like Little Miss Muffet and The Itsy Bitsy Spider. Spider was portrayed positively in E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web but negatively by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
