FALCON
Falcon is associated with victory, guardianship, and protection. It is a hunter spirit that carries the regal power of kings and queens.
Falcons are birds of prey found on all of the continents except Antarctica. Even Antarctica’s fossil record shows that the predecessors of today’s Falcon existed there in prehistoric times. The earliest Falcon fossils are from the Miocene Epoch which was ten million years ago. Falcon is included in the genus Falco. It was first recognized to be a part of that genus in 1758 by Linnaeus in the tenth edition of his Systema Naturae. Falcons have thin tapered wings that allow them to fly at very fast speeds and make quick turns.
Throughout history, Falcon has been an important animal for human beings. In ancient Egypt, Falcon was a symbol of the living pharaoh. The sun god Ra was often depicted as a Falcon. The great god Horus had the head of a Falcon. Falcon was considered by the Egyptians to be the king of all birds. Europeans treasured the Falcon for its assistance in hunting. It was often considered an emblem of war in European cultures. In Norse cultures, Falcon was associated with several of the gods. It was often depicted with Loki, the trickster god. It was also placed by the side of Frigg, the goddess of wisdom, and Woden or Odin, the king of the gods. In Celtic cultures, Falcon was a symbol of prestige and power. Falcon was often used by the nobility in hunting practices. It was such an important bird that its use was limited to specific members of the upper classes. Only a king could use a Gyrfalcon. Only a prince could use a Peregrine Falcon. Only a duke could use a Rock Falcon. Falcons are also found in cultural tales of the indigenous tribes of the Americas. They were particularly important to tribes of the Mississippian cultures which existed between 1000 and 1560 CE.
