SPHERES

Meaning and Background

A Sphere is a three dimensional geometric figure that is the surface of a ball. Like the two dimensional circle, every point on its surface is equidistant from its center. The term “sphere” is derived from the Greek word sphaira which means “globe” or “ball.” All aspects of the Sphere have been defined by geometric equations that describe its surface area, volume, and many other points of information about this important universal shape. A Sphere is uniquely determined by a circle and a point that is not in the plane of that circle. It is an important part of non-Euclidean distance, differential, and projective geometric equations. It is important in understanding the geographic make-up of the Earth and the placement of the poles and longitude and latitude lines or meridians.

History

In many ancient cultures, the Sphere was the representative symbol of the heavens. The Earth was a flat surface underneath the half Sphere that contained the Heavens above. The Sphere remains an awesome symbol of the universe as a whole. It represents unity, completeness, and infinity. Indeed, its form can be seen scattered across the day and night time skies. It is the form of the Earth and all of the planets. It is the form of the sun, the moon, and the stars. The sky seems to hang above us in the form of a half Sphere that runs from horizon to horizon all around any point of reference. An individual atom, which is the structural basis for everything in the universe, takes the form of a Sphere. 

The Crystal Ball

A crystal ball, also called an orb, orbuculum, and crystal Sphere, is a Sphere carved from some type of crystal stone. The Sphere in the form of a crystal ball has been recognized all over the world throughout history as a source of metaphysical power. It was described by Pliny the Elder in the first century as a device used by soothsayers. Its use is recognized during the Middle Ages as a device that could be used to attain clairvoyance and for scrying which is gazing into a surface to search for meaningful information that can be used to make important decisions. Its use was widespread throughout the Roman Empire and was condemned as witchcraft by the early Christian church. Dr. John Dee, who was a noted astronomer, mathematician, and consultant to British Queen Elizabeth I, used the crystal ball as a source of information.
