WHALE

Whales are symbols of compassion, solitude, communication, great wisdom, healing, the importance of family, emotional rebirth, and unbridled creativity. They have been revered by humankind for countless years.

Whales are oceanic mammals of the suborder Cetacea that live in all of the oceans and seas of the world. There are many species of Whale including the Blue Whale which is the largest animal in the world, the Humpback Whale which is known for its haunting songs, and Orca, the Killer Whale, which is seen by some cultures as a reincarnated human being. The closest living relative of the Whale is the Hippopotamus from which it diverged around forty million year ago. Whales are anywhere from approximately 8.5 feet to 98 feet long. The Celtic culture depicts the Whale as a symbol of the power of water. In parts of Africa, the Whale was seen as a guide who helps the soul cross over to the afterlife. The Christian culture has described the Whale as a symbol of the devil. It is also connected to the reincarnation of Christ through the story of Jonah and the Whale. Probably the most famous Whale of all time is the great white Whale hunted by Captain Ahab in Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick.
