Owl is a great hunter with eyes that can see in the dark and feathers that enhance silent flight. Owl is a symbol of action. It is a messenger filled with discernment and wisdom.  It brings comfort and freedom. It is a bird of the night.

Owl is a woodland bird. It is a nocturnal predator that feeds mostly on small mammals and insects. It is solitary and hunts alone. It has been both feared and venerated in human culture and art throughout history.  In ancient India and Greece, it was a symbol of wisdom that was helpful and prophetic. In Greek mythology, it was the favorite bird of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The Greeks believed Owl had an inner light that gave it spectacular vision at night. In ancient Rome, the Owl was feared as an associate of witches that sucked blood from babies. That dark link continued through the Middle Ages in Europe. In English folklore, it was seen as a bird of doom. Native American tribes had great respect for Owl. The ancient Anasazi saw it a protector from water devils and monsters. The Hopi revered the burrowing Owl as the god of the dead. The Navajo respected Owl as a prophet. The Tlingit hooted like an Owl for confidence during battle.

An Owl totem brings discernment and wisdom. It is the master of silence with no fear of the occult, darkness or magic. It has the gift of prophecy and great wisdom. It also has the power to detect secrets from those around it. It can read the mind and emotions and see into the soul. It is clairvoyant.
