LAPIS

Lapis, also known as Lapis Lazuli, is a blue metamorphic rock. Unlike most stones, which are composed of a mineral with various other substances as inclusions, Lapis is actually composed of many different minerals. In addition to Lazurite, which gives Lapis its deep blue color, a Lapis specimen may contain Calcite, Pyrite, Sodalite, Hauyne, Wollastone, Afghanite, Mica, Dolomite, Diopside, and many other minerals. To qualify as Lapis, it must be composed of at least twenty five percent Lazurite. It forms near igneous intrusions where Limestone or Marble has been subjected to contact or hydrothermal metamorphosis. The leading source for Lapis is Afghanistan, but it is found in Chili, Russia, Canada, Argentina, Pakistan, and the western United States. It has been revered and used by humans throughout recorded history. It was used for beads, jewelry, and sculptures in Afghanistan as early as 7000 B.C. Lapis artifacts have been found in Neolithic architectural digs in Pakistan, Iraq, and Afghanistan that date back to 3000 B.C. In Egypt, its use dates back to 3000 B.C. when it was used for jewelry and ground into a power used for pigment and cosmetics. Ground Lapis was called Ultramarine Blue pigment used by the greatest artist the world has known from the middle Ages through modern times. It was used by Van Gogh in The Starry Night and by Vermeer in Girl with a Pearl Earring. It is a beautiful stone that carries a strong vibration of truth, promotes self-awareness and self-expression.
