Much of the Citrine on the market is actually heat-treated purple Amethyst or Smoky Quartz. Natural Citrine is generally a lighter colored stone from yellow to light yellow-orange. Heat treated Citrine is generally darker and often has a reddish tint. Natural Citrine is sometimes called Lemon Quartz. Natural Citrine is found in Russia, France, and Madagascar. Much of the heat-treated Citrine comes from Brazil. Its name is derived from the French word for “lemon.” Citrine is sometimes mistaken for Topaz, a higher quality crystal. Citrine has an ancient reputation as a Stone of Abundance that attracts wealth. It was considered highly positive for merchants of all kinds and known as the Success Stone and Merchant Stone.
