ELEPHANT
Elephants are symbolic of beauty, power, dignity, intelligence, gentleness, wisdom, and peace. They are a symbol of good luck and good fortune. They also symbolize the divine.
Elephants in nature are large herbivorous mammals that exist in Africa and Asia. Female Elephants and their offspring live in groups led by a matriarch which is usually the oldest female. Male Elephants after they reach puberty live in groups of males or alone. Elephants have been important to humankind since pre-historic times. They are depicted in prehistoric art on cave walls and artistic works in multiple cultures all over the world. They have played a big cultural role to tribes and people all over the world. In Europe the Elephant has been a symbol of military might since ancient Roman times. Alexander the Great made the Elephant the symbol of imperial power to the ancient Greeks. In India the Elephant has had a huge impact on religious and spiritual practices. The White Elephant is the symbol of Queen Maya of Sakya, the mother of Gautama Buddha. The Hindu Lord of Wisdom, Ganesha, has the head of an Elephant. Many of the Hindu gods and goddesses are associated with Elephants. Indra, the god of the gods, has a white Elephant as his vehicle. In the Middle East, Mohammad was born in the Year of the Elephant, and the Elephant plays a part in many of the myths of that area.
The Elephant totem is the totem of a leader. It exemplifies focused power and strength. The Elephant brings us deeper understanding of Mother Earth. It enhances the female attributes. It will always be a protector of the young and weak. It is gentle and wise. It will always put its family first.
