SQUIRREL
Squirrel just wants to have fun, but only after it has set aside all that is needed for the winter months.
Squirrel is a small mammal of the family Sciuridae which includes many other small rodents such as Chipmunk, Marmot, and Prairie Dog. Squirrels have existed since the Late Eocene (46.3 to 37 million years ago) in North America and the Miocene (23.8 to 5.3 million years ago) in Euro-Asia and Africa. Squirrels were a source of food for early man. By the mid-nineteenth century, Squirrels had been eradicated in urban areas, but began to be re-introduced into city parks. The first introduction occurred in Philadelphia in 1847. Later, as parks began to expand in cities, Squirrel’s introduction occurred in New York City, Boston, New Haven, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Re-introduction of the Squirrel became a part of the Frederick Law Olmstead movement to include beauty and nature inside the cities of America. In children’s literature and Boy Scout manuals, there is an indication that teaching children to feed Squirrels was a way to teach children to act with kindness.
