Orca is a symbol of family, romance, longevity, harmony, community, and protection.

Orca, also known as the Killer Whale, is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family. It is the largest of the dolphin family and recognized by its patterned black and white body. Orca has been recognized in some cultures as The Lords of the Ocean. It is found in almost all of the world’s oceans from the Arctic to the Antarctic in both cold and tropical settings. It feeds on fish and marine animals such as seals and dolphins. It has one of the largest brains of the marine animals and is considered intelligent. It displays sophisticated vocal patterns and hunting techniques which are passed down from generation to generation. It travels in pods and has a complex social system that is matriarchal in nature. Orca mates for life. Some males remain with their mothers for life. Female Orca are known to live up to ninety years. Orca depends on underwater sound for orientation, feeding, and communication. It vocalizes with three different types of sounds: clicks, whistles, and pulsed calls. All members of a pod use similar calls known collectively as the pod’s dialect. Orca teaches skill to its young and is known to imitate behavior.

Orca appears in legend and myth in cultures around the world. It is considered sacred in some Vietnamese myths. In Iceland there are legends that Orca protects fishing boats. In Chinese culture, Orca is known as Yu Kiang, a thousand foot long shapeshifting whale. Orca is found in Native American cultures as a medicine animal with great strength and power. It is a totem animal to Tlingit and Kwakwaka’wakw tribes.
