AMETHYST

Amethyst is a purple variety of Quartz. It is one of the most popular gemstones of all time. It exists in many different shades of purple from very light to very deep, from a reddish colored purple to a deep purple closer to the blue side of the color palette. Its color begins to occur when iron seeps into the crystal during its growth. The color is then finished when gamma rays from the host rock bathe the growing crystal. The crystal has been found in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks all over the world. It is a powerful spiritual motivator that stills the mind and enhances a deep meditative state. Its name is derived from the Greek word Ametusthos which means “not intoxicated” and is derived from a Roman myth. Ametusthos was the name of a young maiden in a myth about Bacchus, the Roman god of agriculture and wine, and Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt, the moon, and birth. Bacchus, angered by an insult, vowed to kill the next person he met. He set loose his tigers to attack and kill the maiden, who was walking innocently toward Diana’s temple. Diana protected the maiden by turning her into a crystalline structure. When Bacchus realized what had happened, he was remorseful and honored the maiden by pouring sacred purple wine over her giving the crystal its beautiful color. Amethyst has been held in high esteem by cultures all around the world throughout history. It is known as the Gem of Fire for its deep purple color and sparkling crystalline points. It was believed to have the energy of fire that stimulates passion, creativity, and spirituality. It is also known as the stone of Saint Valentine and associated with the love of a faithful spouse. It has also been called the Bishop’s stone as it was used in the rings worn by the bishops of the Christian church to signify ecclesiastical dignity and pious attitude. It is said to prevent drunkenness and over-indulgence. Ancient cultures studded wine glasses with Amethyst to balance their use of wine. It has also been said that it has the power to control evil and increase intelligence. It was used as a talisman for travelers and hunters to prevent threats and inspire confidence. Native American arrow heads made of Amethyst have been found in the southwestern United States. It was included as a stone of power on the breastplate of Hebrew high priests and listed in the Egyptian Book of the Dead as important in the transition process between life and death. It is considered sacred in Eastern religions and used in temples to align the planets and honor the gods.
